Welcome to the IHI Open School online courses!

We’re so happy you’re here to learn about improving health and health care. To help you find your way, here are some basic instructions.

Open School courses are broken into digestible, 15- to 40-minute lessons. The Curriculum Overview provides a complete listing of course titles, lesson titles, authors, and learning objectives.

Use our simple numbering system to find the right level of learning for you:

  • 100-level courses = Introductory concepts for all health care audiences
  • 200-level courses = Intermediate concepts and specialized topic areas
  • 300-level courses = Project-based learning

The Open School’s Basic Certificate in Quality and Safety comprises 13 essential courses, indicated with an asterisk(*). Track your progress toward this milestone using the “Certificates” tab.

At the end of every lesson, you will need to pass a post-lesson assessment by scoring 75 percent or higher. Don’t worry: You may continue to retake the lesson until you are satisfied with your score. Once you have completed all the lessons in a course, you will receive credit for the course upon submission of a short survey.

Why do we require the surveys? They allow us to provide continuing education credits, which you can redeem under the “Certificates” tab, and they help us improve.
